The false consensus effect
This is the tendency to believe that other people's beliefs, opinions, or behaviors are more similar or agree with our own beliefs, opinions, or behaviors than they actually are. For example, if we believe that a certain quality or trait is important for success in a job, we may be more likely to assume that other people share this belief, and to overlook or dismiss alternative or dissenting perspectives. The false consensus effect can cause us to make biased or narrow-minded hiring decisions, and it can lead us to overlook the value of diversity, curiosity, or learning in the hiring process.
